Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is something that every person who intends to do business through the web needs to know if they are planning to do so through a website. Even if the new site owner is going to have the site professionally done, they need to have a good understanding of what search engine optimisation is.
What Is Search Engine Optimisation?
It basically is the method used to get traffic to your site through the search engines. Search engines are what lists all the sites that are present on the web. The key is where they put a website in their listings. There are thousands upon thousands of websites that they put in these lists. These are the pages that turn up when you use a search engine like Google for a specific term. The objective of a web owner is to get their website to show up on the first page of a listing and preferably the first spot on that page. In addition to this, it has to be for the most important search term for the business of the website. So, for example, a website that sold car parts would want to show up in the first spot when an individual used google to search for “car parts”. There have been some big changes in SEO, but some of the older information is still applicable today for success.
Success With SEO
There are three very important factors that a person has to keep in mind with SEO, which are:
- The type of content that people using the web want and need
- The basic ways that search engines work
- How to properly optimise a website.
Although there can be a lot of changes that take place with SEO tactics, these three fundamentals never change.
How Search Engines Work?
Search engines are very secretive about the way they work, but over the years a lot of their tactics have been figured out. The reason they keep these secrets are so there is fair play when it comes to getting a website ranked. Some of the basics of how search engines work is as follows:
- A web owner can submit their website to a search engine for consideration to be listed in their index.
- Or, the search engine may come across the website itself when crawling the web.
The search engine will crawl the pages of the website. When doing so, it will look for keywords and content to help it determine what the website is about. The better the content can explain what the website is about, the better the chances of the site getting indexed well. The best way to achieve this is with the use of keywords.
The search engines also can identify other factors about the website. Such as when the pages or site was last updated. Also, how people visiting the site engage with it.
Undoubtedly all of these factors play an important role in SEO.
Out of all the different components that SEO is comprised of the easiest for the web site owner to understand are keywords. Some have been indicating that keywords are not as important as what they used to be. This is a fallacy. Although there are other factors that have become part of SEO that has taken on a level of importance.
One of the problems that have arisen with keywords is that there are not as many resources available to help choose the best ones. Another significant change that took place was in the way search engines were perceiving search terms based on keywords. For example, Google now will rewrite the search queries that people are using. However, this does not detract from the principle that keywords are needed to identify what a person is looking for.
Keywords provide the clues of what people are looking for. If these are present in the content of a website, then the search engines are going to recognise this and get that content in its proper place in their database.
What has been covered here is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to what SEO is all about and its importance. Anyone that needs to rely on SEO for their business needs to do more intense research on this topic. It is not something that can be ignored.
